PhD student in Solid Mechanics

Arbetsbeskrivning

Hereby advertises a position as

PhD student in Solid Mechanics

formally based at the Department of Management and Engineering (IEI).

Solid mechanics and the human arterial system
Background

Mechanical properties of arteries have a significant impact on the structure and function of the human arterial system. There is also a direct link between mechanical properties and the development of many cardiovascular diseases, which are the number one cause of death globally. The research in mathematical models which can be used to study the mechanics of the vascular system has therefore undergone a rapid growth over the last decades. The mathematical models and computational methods developed today are not only enhancing our understanding of cardiovascular diseases, they are also starting to play a role as diagnostic tools.

Research profile

The PhD student will be responsible for developing a nonlinear model which can describe the mechanics of human arteries from non-invasive clinical measurements. The research includes nonlinear continuum mechanics, numerical methods, parameter identification, and experimental methods. It is therefore advantageous if the applicant has a background and an interest in solid mechanics and/or mathematics. The research is done together with the Division of Cardiovascular Physiology at the Medical Faculty. Knowledge in medicine and physiology is not a prerequisite, however.

The Division of Solid Mechanics has currently 23 employees and is conducting research within areas such as biomechanics, high-temperature mechanics, and optimization, see www.solidmechanics.iei.liu.se. As a PhD student you will be part of a dynamics and challenging environment. You will require a deep knowledge how to handle complex technical issues which will be useful in your future carrier, whether it is in the academia or in the industry. For more information, please contact the research leader Jonas Stålhand (jonas.stalhand@liu.se) or the head of the division Kjell Simonsson (kjell.simonsson@liu.se).

Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years´ full time research training.

Starting date
15 September, 2015.

Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department’s salary scale.
