PhD student in Theoretical/numerical research on fusion plasma physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research
The research activity is directed towards the study of the physics of magnetically confined fusion plasmas, using advanced analytical and numerical tools. Special emphasis is given to low frequency instabilities in inhomogeneous plasmas and the associated turbulent transport processes. The main aim of the research is to obtain an improved understanding and predictive capability of transport in fusion machines in order to provide support to the analysis and simulation of present tokamak experiments in preparation for ITER exploitation.

The activity is strongly integrated in the EUROFUSION program, in particular the JET and the ITER programmes for the realisation of nuclear fusion as an energy source, and the research work is carried out in an international environment.

The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy group at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences has its main activities in modelling, simulation and analysis of tokamak plasmas. A major part of the work is towards the establishment of a predictive capability of turbulent transport for fusion energy grade plasmas and model validation towards current experiments. The group has extensive collaborations with major fusion devices and are taking part in the developments for future fusion energy experiments and reactors.
