PhD student in water quality monitoring

PhD student in water quality monitoring

Arbetsbeskrivning

Are you interested in a PhD project on water quality monitoring and treatment?

Information about the research
New technologies are needed to improve the monitoring of natural organic matter (NOM) in water, and to quantify how NOM quantity and composition changes in response to physical, chemical and biological processes. Can we predict how water quality will respond to specific kinds of treatment? What role can fluorescence sensors play in water quality monitoring?

Explore these questions in a PhD at the division of Water Environment Technology (WET) in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Collaborators in this project work at the Danish University of Technology, Lund University and in municipal water treatment plants. The project connects to the Swedish Center for drinking water research (DRICKS).

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies while contributing to the research and teaching environment at ACE. You will perform experiments and analyses in the laboratory, collate, manage and interpret data, and document results in publications. Research may involve field sampling. Instruments for fractionating, quantifying and characterising NOM will be used, with a focus on spectroscopy (absorbance and fluorescence). You will be working with data-intensive measurements for which skills in data analysis/data mining and programming will be beneficial to have from the outset, or otherwise must be developed during your PhD. You will need to communicate effectively with academic and industrial collaborators and coordinate your research activities to meet our common goals.

Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment lasting at least 4.5 years and up to a maximum of five years. This includes three years of research, one year of coursework, and 0.5-1 year of teaching, with all three activities conducted in parallel.

Qualifications
You must have a master's or honours level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in analytical chemistry, aquatic chemistry, chemical ecology, environmental science, environmental engineering or similar. You are creative, well-organised, resourceful and tenacious when problems arise. You have good laboratory skills and experience with water quality measurements and/or chemical analyses. It is meritorious if you have have experience or have taken classes in any of these topics: statistics, data analysis, computer science, chemometrics, biometrics, drinking water treatment, aquatic chemistry, aquatic ecology, microbial ecology and analytical chemistry.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. It is beneficial if you can communicate fluently in written and spoken Swedish.
