PhD student or Post Doc researcher in microwave based trauma diagnostics

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a Post Doc or PhD student to research a microwave based system for detection of head, chest and abdomen trauma. The goal is to develop a portable, robust and lightweight system suitable for military use in the field. The project will include both numerical simulatations and prototype systems design and testing.

Project description
Microwave technology has the potential to improve health care in several areas and the research group's is developing methods and systems for medical diagnostics and treatment. Application areas include stroke and trauma diagnostics, breast cancer detection and microwave hyperthermia treatment of cancer tumors. The research focus is on signal processing methods, antenna systems design and design of measurement hardware. Construction of prototype systems suitable for clinical tests is a key goal in all projects.

The project is to research a system for detection of head, chest and abdomen trauma and includes:
- Numerical modeling and simulations
- Prototype design
- Evaluation of prototype in lab settings.

The positions are within the Department of Electrical Engineering, where we conduct internationally renowned research in biomedical engineering, antenna systems, signal processing, image analysis, automatic control, automation, mechatronics, and communication systems. We offer a dynamic and international research environment with about 200 employees from more than 20 countries, and with extensive national and international research collaborations with academia, industry and society. The department provides more than 70 courses, of which most are included in the Master’s Programs ”Biomedical Engineering”, ”Systems, Control and Mechatronics”, and ”Communication Engineering”.

Major responsibilities
Your main responsibility is to conduct research within your project in collaboration with researchers in the group.
As a PhD student you are expected to participate in teaching up to 20 % of full time on undergraduate or master's level.
As a Post Doc teaching may be included in the position.

Qualifications
Applicants for a PhD position should have, or expect to receive, a MSc degree or equivalent corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in electrical engineering, applied physics or biomedical engineering.

Applicants for a Post Doc position need to have a PhD degree within the topic microwave technology for medical applications. The PhD degree must be awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate and initiative to work independently. Excellent communication skills in writing and fluency in English are required.

If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
