We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student or a Postdoc researcher to be part of our experimental research on 2D quantum materials heterostructure-based spintronic and quantum devices at the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. This project aims to investigate the electronic, quantum, and spin transport properties in nanoscale devices of 2D materials heterostructure and explore its application for spin-orbit torque device.
Information about the research and the division
2D quantum materials-based nanodevice research at Chalmers aims to engineer van der Waals heterostructures to realize novel quantum and spintronic phenomena at the interfaces. Our group develops novel nanofabrication approaches and designs new measurement techniques that lead to fundamental physics experiments and practical applications. This experimental research consists of preparing 2D materials heterostructure, device fabrication in a "state of the art" cleanroom, and sensitive electronic, quantum and spintronic measurements.
This research will be carried out in strong collaboration with different groups in European Union, Sweden, and worldwide with complementary experimental and theoretical expertise. This project is part of the new European Union FLAG-ERA project 2DSOTECH coordinated by Professor Saroj Prasad Dash at Chalmers and a Swedish Research Council VR project. His group is also part of the European Union funded Graphene Flagship, looking for practical electronic applications of graphene and related 2D materials based spintronic devices. These studies aim for a better understanding and control of quantum and spin transport phenomenon in these novel 2D quantum materials heterostructures, and can pave the way for future generations of information technology, which can be smaller, faster, more sensitive and energy-efficient for a sustainable society.
This research is well supported by the excellent cleanroom Nanofabrication and characterization facility available in the department. The department houses 1240 m2 of cleanroom space with state-of-the-art research equipment providing a broad platform for the development and testing of new ideas in nanoscience.
The position will be placed in the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory, at The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience. The main research focus of the laboratory is on 2D Materials based devices, spintronics, quantum transport, topological quantum materials and devices, superconducting quantum device. The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility in this project is to perform research on emerging 2D topological quantum materials and magnetic materials down to the atomic scale and their van der Waals heterostructure with moiré superlattice and to develop new concepts in the device physics and applications in nanoelectronics and spintronics. It includes the growth of 2D materials, preparation of heterostructure, cleanroom nanofabrication with electron beam lithography, structural characterization and electronic, spintronic and quantum transport measurements.
As a PhD student, you are expected to take responsibility of your part in the described project, to publish high-quality research in scientific journals and at conferences.
As a postdoc, you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
Qualifications
To qualify for the PhD position, you must have a master level degree in a relevant field, e.g Physics, Electrical Engineering or Nanosicence and Nanotechnology.
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields stated above; the degree should generally not be older than three years. Candidates with more than three years of experience will be considered for a researcher position.
For both positions, excellent writing and communication skills in English are required.
Contract terms
Either a PhD student or postdoc position will be formed, depending on the selected candidate. The PhD position is limited to a maximum of five years and the postdoc is limited to two years. In both cases, the position is on a full-time, temporary employment basis.
