Information about the research
High speed communication enable people to collaborate globally, industrial production to be automated, and cars to be self-driving – just to give a few examples of today. To improve the speed and energy efficiency of communication is a fundamental demand in our society. Such a development is enabled by the continuous downscaling of semiconductor technology (Moore’s law). This has resulted in RF transistors operating beyond 500 GHz, opening new millimeter wave frequency bands for exploration in future wireless communication systems. High speed transistors also enable high speed digital signal processing. In fact, many traditional analog RF building blocks can be replaced by flexible all-digital software defined radio solutions. Also optical components with faster modulation speed are enabled by this development. Fiber-optical interconnects with terabit per second capacity is now being developed for future consumer devices and cloud computing infrastructure system needs.

In this position you will investigate completely new all-digital solutions for generation and remote distribution of microwave and millimeter wave wireless communication signals. You will work with combinations of microwave electronics, high speed optical interconnect devices, and advanced signal processing techniques with the overall goal to explore the ultimate limits for flexible and energy efficient digitally intense radio transmitters. The research results may thus have strong impact in the realization of future wireless systems for communication, sensor, and imaging.

The position is hosted by the Microwave Electronics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), but will involve a close collaboration with researchers both at the Photonics Laboratory at MC2 and the Communication Systems Group at the Electrical Engineering department. You will thereby have access to state-of-the art microwave and photonics components, world-class measurement infrastructure, and advanced signal processing expertise as needed to carry out this research project.

You will also be an important part of a cross-disciplinary team of PhD students and senior researchers that perform research on future communication systems, ranging from component to system level.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies, including both coursework and research. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, or Engineering Physics with specialization in microwave electronics and photonics. Further, experience from RF circuit design, high frequency optical and microwave measurements, and/or advanced signal processing are important merits.

Since communication of research results is a central part of the work, communicative skills in English (oral as well as in writing) are vital. Furthermore, it will also be expected that you can take on responsibility, take own initiatives and work independently when needed. At the same time it is important that you are good at working in teams. This is especially vital since the current project will interact closely with adjacent disciplines. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large.
