PhD student position

Arbetsbeskrivning

Project description
The aim of this project is to propose solutions for ESSs for a massive integration of renewable energy sources in the power systems.

Focusing on modular configurations, converter topologies as well as different energy storage media will be considered and investigated. Different system designs will be evaluated and ranked to find the optimal configuration, based on the specific grid services to be provided. Selected topologies will be verified analytically, in a simulation environment and experimentally in a small-scale laboratory prototype.

The project will be carried out at Chalmers University of Technology, department of Electrical Engineering in tight collaboration with Hitachi Power Grids.

The Division of Electric Power Engineering
The Division of Electric Power Engineering is conducting research in the area of power system, power electronics and electric machines. Our goals are to enhance the knowledge base regarding electrical systems for renewables, vehicles, buildings and industrial applications. We are continuously facing a change in the position of the research front within these areas.

The division has a long research and specializes in the field of application of power electronics in power systems and in the design and integration of renewable generations. This project expands our ongoing research activities on integration of energy storage systems in the electric power grid.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as a PhD student is to purse your own doctoral education. You are expected to be an independent researcher and to develop your own scientific knowledge and skills and communicate the results of your research orally and in writing. The position comprises both theoretical modelling as well as practical experimental parts.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to five years and will normally include 15-20% departmental work, typically as lab assistant and exercise leader of different courses.

You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 5 years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a Master’s degree or equivalentcorresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Electric Power Engineering, with an emphasis on power systems and power electronics. Good ability to cooperate is a prerequisite together with the ability to focus on issues. Excellent writing and communication skills in English are required. The skill to conduct teaching in Swedish is an advantage.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
