PhD student position

PhD student position

Arbetsbeskrivning

In this project, you will work closely with experts in material synthesis and characterization as well as powder based metal additive manufacturing and be a part of the Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal (CAM2). Your research will have impact on development of novel multi-functional materials for advanced applications.

Project description
This research project is carried out at the Division of Materials and Manufacture at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science (IMS). You will be part of a multidisciplinary environment and work closely with researchers being experts in additive manufacturing, thermal spraying and materials characterization at Chalmers as well as other academic and industrial partners.

The project focuses on the functionalization of powders by different means (e.g. graphene and nanoparticles) and the characterization of the achieved powders using techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM / TEM), surface analysis (XPS and AES), and Raman spectroscopy. As part of the work, you will also be involved in using the functionalized powder to produce coatings and parts by, e.g., additive manufacturing and thermal spraying and evaluate the achieved properties. The aim is to produce coatings/parts that can improve the performance of wear-prone parts in applications that require low friction, or to significantly improve thermal and electrical properties, as well as to develop powder consolidation using variety of technologies as e.g. powder-based metal additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy and thermal spraying.

The department and the division
The main competencies at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of: Human-Technology Interaction | Form and Function | Modeling and Simulation | Product Development | Material | Production and in the interaction between these areas. The research develops the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.

The Division of Materials and Manufacture covers the entire value chain from materials design, processing, characterization to machining of primarily metals. We employ a range of technologies - powder metallurgy, electroplating, additive manufacturing, and material removal - and a range of advanced characterization techniques. Our work is interdisciplinary by nature and is addressing topics that have a direct impact on sustainability. The division is collaborating closely with other universities and research institutes and is implementing industry-academia partnerships through collaborative projects and strategic initiatives such as the Competence Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal (CAM2) and the Chalmers Centre for Metal Cutting Research (MCR).

Major responsibilities
Your main responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your doctoral studies within the framework of the outlined research project. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position includes 10% departmental work, mostly as a teaching assistant in Chalmers' undergraduate and masters-level courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
We would like you to have:
(1) A Master’s level degree in either Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
(2) High motivation, and an analytical and problem-solving personality, and strong interest or previous experience in machining and material characterization.
(3) Excellent team-working and communication skills.
(4) Good English communication skills, both orally as well as written.
(5) Ability to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of the project.
