PhD student position at Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry Chemical gas analysis in thermal conversion of biomass See complete ad: www.jobb.umu.se Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry (ETPC) is a strong platform initiative within the department and is also closely linked to the Department of Chemistry and the Unit of Biomass Technology and Chemistry at the Swedish university of agricultural science.Six senior scientists and nine PhD students are working at ETPC.Several extensive research projects of both fundamental and applied character are run with the main focus to understand and develop thermochemical conversion processes for biomass raw materials. The PhD student project will be in the area of conversion of biomass to liquid fuels and ?green?chemicals. The main focus is on analysis of the composition of torrefaction, pyrolysis and gasification gases in both laboratory and pilot-scale reactors, and determining the effects of different fuel and process parameters.Other interesting high temperature applications are studies of syngas quality on catalyst function (product yield/deactivation), elucidation of sulfur chemistry in reducing atmospheres, on-line gas analysis of other thermal conversion processes. The duration of a PhD project is 4 years full time to a PhD exam.Applicants should have a good knowledge within analytical chemistry, and should be strongly motivated for research focused on applications for production of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources. It is an advantage if you have experience of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.Formal requirements include: (i) 240 ECTS credit points (Swe.högskolepoäng) of higher education studies within the area of chemistry or chemical engineering, of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), (ii) equivalent educational merits gained in Sweden or abroad, or (iii) 120 Swedish (old) credit points (Swe.poäng) if this is achieved before 2007-07-01.The requirements mentioned need to be met at the time of acceptance to doctoral studies, not at the time when your application is submitted.Umeå university has the ambition to support equality, and when a majority of our employees at the department are men, we encourage female applicants. The procedure for recruitment for the position is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (chapt.12, 2 ) and the decision regarding the position cannot be appealed.Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.
