PhD student position dealing with the development of district cooling

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the division
Building Services Engineering is first of all about design and dimensioning of systems and technical installations (electricity, heat, ventilation, air conditioning, i.e. HVAC) to meet the functional requirements (thermal comfort, air quality, etc.) in buildings. To some extent it also deals with the external systems that supply energy to buildings.

The research project is about the development of district cooling systems, especially cooling sources (e.g. absorption chillers, sea water) and cooling systems and terminals in buildings (e.g. fan coils, chilled beams, etc.). The R&D project involves both theory (simulations) and laboratory and field measurements. The research project is carried out in close cooperation with Göteborg Energi.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student your major responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research in major journals and conferences. You will collaborate with our industrial and academic partners and will conduct state-of-the-art modelling and experimental work.

You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The position will include up to 20 % of teaching and other departmental work

The undergraduates are normally taught in Swedish, although the graduate level teaching is in English. Thus good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment. .

Position summary

Admission as a doctoral student in Building Services Engineering normally requires a Master of Science degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics, or chemical engineering. For this specific position a degree in mechanical or civil engineering is meritorious. Hands on experience with heating, cooling and/or control systems is meritorious.

Excellent English communication skills are needed for research and publication purposes.

The ability to communicate in Swedish is also of great value for this project but is not a prerequisite.

The project will run in cooperation with industrial partners, hence the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills.
