PhD student position in Advanced Thermoelectric Materials

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering promotes research and education for sustainable development, for improved health and quality of life. Our research ranges from natural science and bioscience, applied chemistry and biotechnology to chemical engineering. Our educational programs are characterized by technological solutions for improving people’s everyday life, and are continuously developed for meeting and promoting societal and industrial development.

We have approximately 400 employees, divided into five research divisions and one administrative unit. We are situated at campus Johanneberg.

Our department is characterized by stimulation of world leading research, in an environment where people develop and create new knowledge.

The details of the departmental research activities may be found at http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/chem/.

The position is placed in the division of Applied Chemistry, where research is carried out in several areas of materials chemistry. The specific research group has its focus on nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications including materials synthesis, characterisation and evaluation.

Major responsibilities
The position concerns development and synthesis of new thermoelectric materials, structural characterization and evaluation of thermoelectric properties. Thermoelectric materials offer a means to convert thermal energy to electricity. We develop new thermoelectric materials and evaluate their properties. The synthesis of the materials offers a number of variables and we are interested in understanding the importance of these on the structure and properties of the materials.

Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. In addition, teaching in the undergraduate or masters curricula at Chalmers is included corresponding to a maximum of half a year of teaching distributed over the duration of the position.

Position summary
The position is centered at the interdisciplinary interface of nanoscience and nanotechnology, materials science and sustainable energy systems.

It is a full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of four and a half years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. A suitable background for candidates is a M.Sc. in Materials Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering with Engineering Physics, Inorganic Chemistry or Applied Physics or an equivalent education, and a strong interest in experimental materials science. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20140253 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: August 4, 2014
