Umeå University, in northern Sweden, is a dynamic university with ca.3 800 employees and 29,000 students, of which 1,300 are in PhD programs.The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science has about 170 members including 50 PhD students (for more information see the department's homepage: www.emg.umu.se/index_eng.html.See also the International office, www.umu.se/international_office for a general presentation of Umeå and the University.PhD student position in aquatic ecology The objective of this PhD project is to study the trophic transfer of carbon and nutrients from phytoplankton and bacterioplankton to metazoan zooplankton, and how the trophic structure and function of pelagic food webs are affected by variable inputs of nutrients and organic matter.The work will to a large extent include laboratory experiments where metazoans are fed with phytoplankton and bacterioplankton.The research will be conducted within the LEREC-project (Lake Ecosystems Response to Environmental Change), which aims are to generate new insight into the dynamics of lake ecosystems, train a new generation of aquatic ecologists, and provide guidelines for a sustainable use of lake resources.The project stresses the necessity to integrate new biogeochemical and ecological concepts in lake ecosystems research.Further information on ongoing projects of the research group can be found at: www.emg.umu.se/lerec To qualify for the position you need a Bachelor or Master university degree, typically with a minimum of 120 ECTS in a field relevant to environmental science (e.g., biology, physical geography).Advanced courses in aquatic ecology, aquatic chemistry, aquatic ecosystems, and limnology or the equivalent are desirable.Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required.The procedure for recruitment for the position is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chpts.5 and 9).The position is available for a four-year period (48 months) as "doktorandtjänst".The application should include a Curriculum Vitae, a short description of relevant experiences and why you are interested, copies of degree certificates from higher education, relevant publications, and contact information of at least two academic references.Further information for the position can be obtained from Dr.Application will be discarded or, if the applicant wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.Your complete application, marked with reference number 313-260-08 should be sent to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive the 28th of February, 2008 at the latest.We look forward to receiving your application!
