PhD-student position in aquatic ecology

Arbetsbeskrivning

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Uppsala PhD-student position in aquatic ecology SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use of biological natural resources. This is achieved through research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment and information extension.SLU has 3 000 employees, 4 200 undergraduate and postgraduate students.Main campuses are located at Alnarp, Skara, Uppsala and Umeå.www.slu.se The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.ma.slu.se) has a unique national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to both water chemistry and the aquatic biota. The mission of the department is to provide the knowledge about human impacts on aquatic ecosystems that society needs to achieve its environmental goals for surface waters. This mission involves the design and implementation of long-term surveillance programs across a range of spatial and temporal scales, studies of the chemical and ecological processes underlying environmental change, as well as the knowledge and tools needed to interpret environmental data and assess management alternatives. We now would like to enlarge our research group by recruiting a PhD-student in aquatic ecology.Project description: Applications are encouraged for a 4 year PhD position within the EU funded REFRESH project. The project aims at increasing our fundamental understanding and prediction capacity of the impacts of climate-driven changes in streams and wetlands. The PhD student's research will be part of a large-scale European field experiment. In streams the emphasis will be on the impact of changing temperatures and low and variable flows under different nutrient conditions. For riparian wetlands the experiments address the processes involved in changing temperatures, changing flooding regimes, reducing nutrient loading on established wetlands and the creation of new wetlands.Applicants should hold a degree in aquatic or landscape ecology, limnology or other relevant subjects and have good knowledge of stream, wetland, or landscape ecology and/or restoration practices.Experience of stream or wetland manipulation and field experiments is meriting, as well as taxonomic knowledge of stream and/or wetland organisms (e.g.macroinvertebrates, or macrophytes). The starting date is negotiable, but preferably no later than 1 March 2010.PhD study programmes leading to a doctorate include a minimum of four years of full-time studies following an undergraduate degree.SLU is an equal opportunity employer.publications), a brief description of research interests, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, at least two letters of reference from persons familiar with the applicant's qualifications, and any other relevant documents. The application must have arrived at the Registrar of SLU, P.O.
