PhD student position in axial flux motors for electric vehicles

PhD student position in axial flux motors for electric vehicles

Arbetsbeskrivning

This position deals with an interesting, useful and timely subject: The design of sustainable high-performing electrical machines for vehicles.  As a PhD student at Electrical power Engineering you will be a team of a multicultural environment, with a great freedom to conduct research towards these research goals. The project is also in contact with local vehicle- and electric machine industry, as well as other universities and the Swedich Electromobility Centre, so you will be part of a great team! You will also study courses as well as conduct teaching, enhancing your pedagogical skills, that also are highly needed in order to be successful in the research community.

Information about the division
The Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university as well as with external partners. Research activities at the division can be organised in three main areas: electric power systems, power electronics, and electric machines. The strength of our research is based on a solid theoretical basis and extensive experimental verification in our laboratories as well as in the field.

Within the team working with power electronics, drives and energy storage for renewables and electrified vehicles we are 30 persons, of which a bit more than half are PhD students, and about 10 seniors and postdocs.

Job description
In this project, the axial flux electrical machine aimed for propulsion of electric vehicles are to be investigated and benchmarked against todays state of the art electric propulsion machines in terms of manufacturing, torque and power density, and regarding recycling / reuse aspects. The project includes experimental testing, multiphysics simulations (electromagnetic, structural, and thermal) and design. The project is a Swedish Electromobility Centre (SEC) project which means that you will have good collaborations with the local car industry, the electric machine industry as well as other Swedish Universities, and you will be part of the SEC-PhD Student network including Swedish PhD Students within the area.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
To be qualified you must have a Master’s degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits or equivalent in Electric Power Engineering or Engineering Physics, with an emphasis on electric drives and electromagnetics. Good proficiency in English orally and in writing is required. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage, if the student is not familiar with Swedish, the student is expected to learn the language within two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
