The candidate will work on leading edge research in chemistry and materials science: chemical functionalization of 2D materials using both covalent and noncovalent approaches towards applications in energy storage.
Information about the department
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the largest department s at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. The Department is also heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas.

We have approximately 250 employees, divided into four research and one administrative division. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg, Sweden.
The PhD position will be located at the division of Chemistry and Biochemistry, one of the four research divisions at the Department of Chemistry and chemical engineering. The Division offers an international dynamic work environment with state of the art equipment, a high percentage of young researchers as well as several well-established scientists in different branches of the basic chemistry disciplines. The research questions dealt with at the division ranges from advancing solar energy conversion to understanding nerve signals and learning. A diverse set of methodologies and techniques, such as chemical synthesis, electronic spectroscopy and imaging mass spectrometry, are used to answer these questions. The division aims to provide excellent research and teaching as well as an outstanding doctoral training.
Major responsibilities
The majority of your working time is devoted to your research studies. As a PhD student you are expected to develop own ideas, guided by your supervisor, and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form.
In addition, the position will normally include 10-20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The employment is limited to four years, with a possibility to be extended for a maximum of one year depending on how much administrative duties that is included during the way.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should have:
(1) Master’s degree primarily in Organic Chemistry, or Materials Chemistry.
(2) High motivation, and an analytical and problem-solving personality, and strong interest or previous experience in synthetic organic chemistry.
(3) Excellent team-working and communication skills.
(4) Good English communication skills, both orally as well as written.
(5) Ability to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of the project.
