We are looking for a PhD student who wants to work on a leading edge research in chemistry and materials science: chemical functionalization of graphene using both covalent and noncovalent approaches towards large scale production for applications in nanocomposites and coating. The project will involve a close collaboration with industrial partners, TALGA and GRAPHMATECH, who will host the PhD candidate for short-term secondments, to test the functionalized graphene prepared at Chalmers.
Information about the research/the project/the division
The PhD position will be located at the division of Chemistry and Biochemistry, one of four research divisions at the Department of Chemistry and chemical engineering. The Division offers a dynamic work environment with state of the art equipment, a high percentage of young researchers as well as several well-established scientists in different branches of the basic chemistry disciplines. The research questions dealt with at the division ranges from advancing solar energy conversion to understanding nerve signals and learning. A diverse set of methodologies and techniques, such as chemical synthesis, electronic spectroscopy and imaging mass spectrometry, are used to answer these questions. The division aims to provide excellent research and teaching as well as an outstanding doctoral training.
Major responsibilities
The majority of your working time is devoted to your research studies. As a PhD student you are expected to develop own ideas, guided by your supervisor, and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form.
In addition, the position will normally include 10-20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The employment is limited to four years, with a possibility to be extended for a maximum of one year depending on how much administrative duties that is included during the way.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree Organic Chemistry, Material Chemistry or Physical Chemistry, or in a relevant field. We believe that you are a person with high motivational, analytical and problem-solving personality, and have a strong interest or previous experience in synthetic organic chemistry. Furhtermore we see that you have excellent team-working and communication skills which are important skills to have in this research project. You also have the ability to work independently and take responsibility for progress as well as the quality of the project.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
