PhD student position in Computer Architecture for DL accelerators

PhD student position in Computer Architecture for DL accelerators

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the project and the division
Emerging applications, such as Machine Learning (ML), are very demanding on the computation and memory requirements. At the same time, the wide spectrum of ML applications pushes these requirements from very constrained systems with extreme energy and thermal limitations up to large scale data center systems. As such, novel architectures need to be developed as to deliver the required performance and at the same time scale efficiently throughout different design points in the compute continuum. In order to achieve these goals we need to move away from general-purpose solutions and focus on Domain Specific Architectures (DSA). Within the context of a recently accepted EU project, Chalmers will work together with other major European partners as to design novel Deep Learning (DL) accelerator architectures. In order to achieve this goal, we will explore the co-design of the architecture between computer architecture and DL algorithms experts. The accelerators will be developed to be part of a network of IoT devices that collaboratively will solve problems for automotive, industry and smart home use cases.

The project will be run in the Division of Computer Engineering within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Within the Division we have four faculty members, two postdocs and eleven PhD students who are engaged in research in computer architecture. The funding for the group comes mostly from national and EU projects. The faculty members have been awarded prestigious grants for their research such as the ERC advanced grant and also participate in top EU projects such as the European Processor Initiative (EPI). The results of the research work are published in highly ranked conferences and journals in the field. In this environment we are currently building up a new research group focusing on the design of advanced Domain Specific Architectures. This announcement is for a position within this new growing group.

International students rate the Chalmers educational experience as one of the best in Europe, according to results from the International Student Barometer. The quality of teaching and assessment receives particular praise. Additionally, when asked if the University was overall ‘a good place to be’, students’ responses put Chalmers at number one in the world. Chalmers has launched a MSc program in High-Performance Computer Systems and in Data Science, putting the topic of this PhD project in the centre of gravity of educational efforts.
