PhD student position in Digitalisation of freight transport management

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Division of Service Management and Logistics is part of the Department of Technology Management and Economics. The research focuses on the management, design, delivery and improvement of services from the perspective of the individual organization as well as the wider supply chain with a particular focus on organizations within four key sectors: transportation, construction, healthcare and manufacturing.

Our goal is to perform high quality research and education at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. We accomplish this by contributing to improvements in all our research areas, in theory as well as in practice. We focus mainly on empirical case-based research in close interaction with industry.

By involving a number of key stakeholders, the Ph.D. candidate is expected to conduct research that aims to contribute to the creation of a digital eco-system that can be used by companies in the European freight industry.  The research will be closely connected to a large EU project in the area of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) with cases and partners from several countries. The research will be carried out in close relation to two Swedish "living labs" of two terminals and with possibilities to also include up to nine other living labs that are part of the same project. Focus is in particular on information sharing between actors in supply chains, both regarding the collection and digitisation of data as well as the exploitation of data using digital technology.

Major responsibilities
As a Ph.D. student your major responsibily is to pursue doctoral studies in relation to some specific research aim. At large, Ph.D. studies include a number of doctoral courses, reviewing literature, designing research studies, interacting with industrial companies, collecting and analysing empirical data, and reporting research results.

You will take part in an ongoing EU-funded project (AEOLIX) focused on creating a digital eco-system for pan-European logistics operations. The basic premise is to, through a common infrastructure of decentralised services and interfaces, analyse and exploit data to acheive sustainable pan-European logistics systems. Chalmers is one of 34 partners (several of which are leading actors in industry and research). The research will be carried out in collaboration with a Ph.D. candidate from the Division of Design & Human Factors involved in the same project.

The exact focus of the work will be decided in interaction with the main supervisor. As a Ph.D. student you take an active role in this research in preparing for and collecting empirical data, conducting analysis and presenting results. During the project, results will continously be presented at seminars and international conferences. Written and oral communication is cruical.

As a Ph.D. student you will also, to a maximum of 20%, be involved in teaching bachelor and master courses in the area of service management and logistics, and/or other departmental tasks.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to five years. You will spend approximately 80% of this time on research and maximum 20% on teaching and other departemental tasks. You will be inscribed into the postgraduate programme and the research school Technology Management and Economics as well as the National ITS postgraduate school. The employment is tied to successful completion of department evaluations after one and three years respectively.
