PhD student position in Engineering physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academy, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

The PhD student will conduct the research at the Terahertz and Millimeter Wave Laboratory at MC2, and collaborate closely with the Photonics Laboratory on the material growth. At the Terahertz and Millimetre Wave Laboratory we conduct research on new materials, devices and circuits for applications in the microwave, millimetre wave and terahertz frequency region. This is part of the electromagnetic spectrum (0.1-10 THz) where optical and microwave techniques meet. We fabricate novel devices in our state-of-the-art Nanofabrication facility at MC2 and evaluate these in various circuit demonstrators in our top-class microwave and terahertz characterisation facilities.

Major responsibilities
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD student to join our activities in developing tunneling devices based on III-V semiconductor nano-heterostructures, for use in high frequency electronics (1-3000 GHz).

The purpose of the project is twofold: the PhD student will design and develop growth of the nano-heterostructures. Secondly, efforts will go into fabricating tunneling devices, e.g. tunneling diode and tunneling field effect transistors (TFET), for a few attractive applications such as THz detection and nanotransistors on Si.

Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position also includes departmental work, mostly as a teaching assistant, corresponding to about 20% of working hours.

Position summary
Full time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
By the starting date, the applicant should have a Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nanoscience or equivalent.

Solid knowledge in the areas of semiconductors is required. Any experience from material characterization, device fabrication in a cleanroom environment, and/or theoretical modeling is a merit.

You should have good communication skills, good analytical and experimental skills and good ability to work independently towards the goals expressed in the project plans.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20150137 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: September 15, 2015
