PhD student position in human body modelling for motor cyclist safety

PhD student position in human body modelling for motor cyclist safety

Arbetsbeskrivning

In this PhD project you will enhance the finite element human body model “SAFER HBM” further, to predict motorcycle rider injuries in crashes. The current SAFER HBM represents a seated occupant. The SAFER HBM will be validated for motorcycle rider kinematics in the most common crash modes and it will also be able to predict the most common injury types sustained by the riders.

Information about the research
The research will be conducted in the Injury Prevention (IP) unit within the division of Vehicle Safety at Chalmers. Our mission is to understand how injuries occur and how they can be prevented, where finite element human body modeling is a core strategic research area of the unit – research that combines computational modeling and the biomechanics of the human body. The chosen candidate will be working in an environment where several other PhD students perform research on other human body modelling applications. The project “Motorcycle Rider Model for Injury Prediction” in which this position is a core component, is carried out in collaboration with Autoliv Development, BETA CAE Nordic and MIPS.

-The details of the departmental research activities may be found here.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD-student in this project you will use literature and epidemiologic data to obtain biological data as a basis for the development of the motorcyclist HBM.
You will then adapt and refine the SAFER HBM to make it suitable for the motorcyclist situation. Finally you will validate the whole body SAFER HBM.

You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. Other responsibilities as a PhD student at Chalmers include teaching in BSc and MSc courses and taking more than a year of own courses (both transferable skills courses, such as ethics, scientific writing, and project managment, and research topic specific courses).

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
You must have completed a Master's degree in in a relevant field (e.g. mechanical engineering with a major in applied mechanics).  Proficiency in programming (Matlab, Phython, or a similar language) is an advantage.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills English.

As the work will be conducted in a highly multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment cultural awareness and good collaboration skills are important. It is equally important that you are quality conscious and a problem solver. As a PhD student you also have to be self-driven and curious.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
