PhD student position in hydrogen technology and additive manufacturing
Join a team with strong national and international network in the field of the rapidly expanding area of additive manufacturing, with unique opportunities to develop you skills and knowledge and make a difference for the future by contributing to the sustainable development involving green hydrogen energy!
Information about the department
The main competencies at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of: Human-Technology Interaction, Form and Function, Modeling and Simulation, Product Development, Materials, Production and in the interaction between these areas. The research develops the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.
Information about the research
The Division of Materials and Manufacture is part of the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The division addresses research questions related to additive manufacturing, powder technology, surface engineering, 2D-materials like graphene, surface coatings, nanomaterials, metal cutting and grinding. The division is the host for the national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metals (http://www.chalmers.se/en/centres/cam2/Pages/default.aspx) which takes the step in development of new materials for additive manufacturing (AM) and design for AM. The division is also active in the new competence center TechForH2 that concentrates on the technology for the use of hydrogen. Here additive manufacturing for hydrogen fuel supply systems is included. The AM activities at the division already involves among the largest groups in AM across Europe with senior researchers, post-docs, PhD students. Now we are seeking a PhD student with interest in metal additive manufacturing, in particular Laser Based Powder Bed Fusion (LB-PBF) with particular emphasis of manufacturing and characterization.
Major responsibilities
The position is connected to the new competence center on TechForH2. In the project, additive manufacturing (laser base powder bed fusion) is used as a means for high performance metallic parts for hydrogen fuel supply systems. The focus are the design, manufacturing, post-processing, surface engineering and characterization. The major responsibility as a PhD student is to perform own research in the research group of Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising of master's students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and industry.
Qualifications
A MSc degree awarded corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits by an internationally recognized university in materials science, mechanical engineering, material mechanics, physics and/or production engineering is required. Experience and good knowledge of metallic materials are considered as advantages.
An interest and curiosity in the subject as well as good analytical skills are desirable. The applicant is expected to be proficient i both verbal and written English. Skills in CAD, powder-bed fusion technology, materials characterization, microscopy, etc., are considered as merits. Applicants are expected to demonstrate good potential within research including project management, and education.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 4.5 years.
