PhD student position in in Systems Engineering Design

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the division and the research
The Systems Engineering Design Group, one of three research groups at the division of Product Development, and part of the Wingquist Laboratory focus our research on design and development of complex products in close collaboration with industrial partners, nationally and internationally. Topics include development methodologies such as Set Based Concurrent Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, development of methods and tools for platform based development and value driven design. The resesearch group is led by Professor Ola Isaksson and has presently 7 full time senior staff (2 professors) and 9 PhD students. The research team addresses highly interdisciplinary research problems and is well established both scientifically and industrially.

-The details of the departmental research activities may be found here.

Major responsibilities
We seek to strengthen the group in the areas of Digital Twin Driven Design of novel and radical technologies and solutions. Product development, especially in the space industry, needs to explore a large variety of design concepts, and to identify the most robust design alternative. However, exploring and predicting the performances of many different designs through physical testing is a very costly approach.

As a PhD student you will learn and develop new methods and tools for exploiting the results from physical testing in digital models, as a means to reuse the results from physical testing to validate new designs and their ranges of validity. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English.

The methods and tools are a part of building next generation digital design and engineering capabilities (exploiting AI and Machile Learning) for product development, targeting a wider and faster exploration of the design space.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in mechanical engineering, automation, applied mechanics, aerospace engineering, applied physics, or similar.

Interest in applied, industrial, product development, along with a strong interest in modelling, simulation and computational methods and tools. Good written and oral communication skills in English is required, and in Swedish meriting. We believe that you are curious and open for interdisciplinary challenges, collaborative oriented both with academic and industrial colleauges. You possess a passion for combining theory and practice.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Meritorious:
- Good written and oral communication skills in Swedish.
- Knowledge in Data Analytics and Machine Learning and AI methods, combined with knowledge in statistical software (e.g., JMP) and ML/AI software platforms (e.g. TensorFlow).

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
