PhD student position in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)

The department of Product and Production Development performs research and education in the areas of styling, design engineering and production development - and in the interaction between these disciplines. The research aims to shorten the time from idea to finished product while achieving an added value for the customer. Automotive and engineering industries are among the major customers. The department has approximately 85 employees and is organized into three sections: Design & Human Factors, Product Development and Production Systems.Information about the division
The division of Production Systems carries out research concerning many aspects of high-performing and sustainable production systems. The research areas of Virtual Production and Production Service Systems focus on research in analysis and decision support systems for effeiciency and reliability of production systems.

Examples of research topics are:

- Simulation of production flows
- 3D laser scanning of production facilities
- Maintenance and improvement activities
- Collection and analysis of production data
- Analysis of sustainability performance

The arena for research is primarily in Swedish and European manufacturing companies, in international research consortiums and in the Production Systems Laboratory at Chalmers.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

During your time as a PhD student you will participate in different national and international research projects involving industry and other partners. The main initial projects are:

Research:To participate in national and European research projects in close collaboration with industry. Use-It-Wisely is a EU-project working to extend the life cycle of production systems. The consortium includes AB Volvo and several other companies and universities from other countries. StreaMod is a national research project providing decision support systems for production and maintenance engineers. The aim is to reduce system losses in new and already existing production systems. The project involves industrial partners such as Volvo Cars, AB Volvo, Siemens, and Virtual Manufacturing.

Research training: To gain a solid base of knowledge and skills in leadership, pedagogics, research methods, and academic writing. 

Teaching: To support, administer and participate as lecturer and teaching assistant in Production-related courses at Chalmers.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


Qualifications
Master of Science degree in product- or production-related science, e.g. within one of the following areas:

- Production Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Automation and Control
- Reliability Engineering
- Information and communication technology

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

The following personal qualities are preferred:

- motivated and taking own initiatives
- teamwork
- networking skills, e.g. with industry
- analytical and structured
- good interpersonal communicator both in terms of writing and speaking

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
