Project: Role of ecological processes in determining effects of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems
Ecological processes, such as species interactions, modify the uptake, exposure to and effects of environmental contaminants in organisms. These aspects are a major challenge in both current Ecotoxicological research and chemicals management, and results from this project are expected to make an important contribution to these fields.
This project will investigate indirect effects of contaminants in aquatic food webs, mainly using experimental approaches in the laboratory and/or semi-field conditions. In addition, food web studies in contaminated field sites are expected.
Eligibility
Applicants must have completed a university degree or university studies of 240 ECTS points (corresponding to 4 years of study), of which at least 60 points at the advanced (e.g. Masters) level. Independent project work corresponding to at least 30 ECTS must have been completed. The requirements can also be met by acquiring the corresponding knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
Evaluation
The applicants are evaluated according to their ability to complete the Ph.D. degree. Special emphasis is put on the applicants knowledge and skills within the subject area, ability to express her/himself verbally and in writing in English, analytical aptitude, creativity, initiative and independence, and a capacity for working together with other researchers. The evaluation will be made based on the relevance of past education and experience, grades from previous university courses (in particular at the advanced level), the quality and ambition of the independent project work, references, the cover letter motivating the candidates interest, and interviews.
The following skills/experiences are of particular merit:
practical experience of experimental and/or field in aquatic sciences,
practical experience of working with contaminants,
analytical ability as demonstrated by a scientific report, paper or degree project thesis
