PhD student position in Mechanical Systems Dynamics

PhD student position in Mechanical Systems Dynamics

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for PhD-student for the project "Novel methods for condition monitoring of mechanical systems". In this project you will build models to identify the health of rotordynamical systems such as drivetrains. The work contains modeling, simulation and experimental validation.

Information about the research project and the Division of Dynamics
The aim of the project is to establish a computational framework for analysis and design of condition monitoring of controlled mechanical systems such as heavy machinery, robots and suspension systems. For your work you will use a combination of methods from physics-based mathematical modelling, dynamic analysis, system monitoring with a multitude of independent sensors and non-deterministic excitation, where the ability to mix theoretical (mathematical and numerical) and experimental results is essential.

Throughout the project there may be opportunities to interact and collaborate with personnel at RISE (Research Institute of Sweden) on measurement techniques as well as colleagues at the railway mechanics competence centre CHARMEC (Chalmers railway mechanics).

The position will be at the Division of Dynamics at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2). As a PhD student you will belong to the Graduate School of Solid and Structural Mechanics following the syllabus at: https://www.chalmers.se/en/research/doctoral-programmes/graduate-schools/Pages/Solid-and-Structural-Mechanics.aspx

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. This includes developing scientific concepts and communicating research results verbally and in writing. The full-time position also includes teaching or other departmental duties, corresponding to 10-20 % of your working hours, and is time limited to up to 4.5-5 years, depending on the amount of teaching and departmental work you do during your doctoral project.

You will be employed by Chalmers and receive a salary according to current salary agreements.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a Master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, civil engineering or engineering physics with emphasis on solid mechanics, structural dynamics and computational methods. Knowledge in control theory, rotor dynamics, signal acquisition and analysis in meritorious. Experience from experimental work is also highly valued.

We are looking for a person who supports a healthy job environment since honesty, respect and transparency are among our core values. You are expected to take initiatives, work independently when needed and take responsibility for your work. It is also important that you are a problem solver and quality conscious. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large.

The position requires oral and written communication skills in English and Swedish. Swedish is not intially required, but you will be encouraged to learn Swedish during employment. Chalmers offers Swedish courses. We would like you to be able to teach tutorials in Swedish on undergraduate level after a few years.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 4.5-5 years, depending on the amount of teaching and departmental work you do during your doctoral project.
