PhD student position in medical science - a7nAChR-a novel target for treating stroke?
Diary id: PAR 2017/85. Project title: The alpha 7 nicotinic receptor - a novel target for treating stroke? Job assignments: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death world-wide. The most common form of stroke, ischemic stroke, is predominantly caused by atherothrombosis, resulting from ruptured atherosclerotic lesions. Inflammation is a key mediator in ischemic stroke, not only during the obstructed blood flow but also when blood flow has been restored. This inflammatory response has deleterious effects in the brain. Hence, inflammation is a potential target for minimizing injury after ischemia, both acutely and during reperfusion. This PhD project aims to identify the mechanisms whereby the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (a7nAChR), modulates inflammation and thereby influences the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. By combining experimental studies and studies in humans, we can identify the mechanisms and understand how the a7nAChR can modulate inflammation and thereby decrease ischemic brain injury. A successful project will provide critical new knowledge on how ?7nAChR can dampen neuroinflammation and contribute to the development of neuroprotective strategies after ischemic stroke. Preferably, the candidates have experience from immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, cell culture work, real-time PCR and other molecular biology techniques. We are looking for a person who is highly motivated and interested in identifying the a7nAChR function and mechanisms in stroke. The PhD candidate is expected to develop their own independent ideas and communicate their results both orally and in writing. The project involves statistical analysis and to work in a structured manner, both independently and as part of a larger team.
Eligibility:
To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirement is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
