Titel:
PhD student position in medical science - microRNAs in chronic airway inflammation

Diary id: PAR 2017/80. Project title: The role of microRNAs in chronic airway inflammation. Job assignments: There is an unmet need to identify mechanisms of uncontrolled asthma, which will result in better management of these diseases and reduce health costs. Asthma is a common chronic disease and it is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous disease, with the presence of distinct phenotypes. Very little is known about the immunopathology underlying the mechanisms of these clinical phenotypes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are new important regulators of gene expression in the immune system. Furthermore, miRNAs have been proposed to regulate T helper (TH) cell plasticity under certain conditions and our recent data demonstrate that miR-155 is essential for TH2 driven allergic inflammation in the lung in a mouse model of acute allergic asthma, which needs further investigation in a chronic model of disease and in human asthma phenotypes. It remains largely unknown how TH cells and miRNAs communicate in order to modulate the different types of inflammatory airway res ponses seen in distinct phenotypes of asthma. An improved understanding of the immune mechanisms in susceptible individuals may facilitate the differentiation of patients into distinct subgroups for targeted therapy and lead to improved treatment strategies and the development of new therapeutic targets. In this project proposal the student will have a very good opportunity to perform translational research and be a part of a dynamic research team which has a very good knowledge in airway inflammation research, including basic science and preclinical research of human asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease which will be a good platform to become a researcher in the field of immunology and respiratory research.

Eligibility: To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirement is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
