Arbetsbeskrivning
The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering promotes research and education for sustainable development, for improved health and quality of life. Our research ranges from natural science and bioscience, applied chemistry and biotechnology to chemical engineering. Our educational programs are characterized by technological solutions for improving people’s everyday life, and are continuously developed for meeting and promoting societal and industrial development.
We have approximately 380 employees, divided into five research divisions and one administrative unit. We are situated at campus Johanneberg.
Our department is characterized by stimulation of world leading research, in an environment where people develop and create new knowledge.Information about the research
At the “Molecular Materials” Group at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology we design and synthesize new self-assembled materials. Based on a small molecule approach, the aim is to make materials for a broad range of applications ranging from single molecule electronics to sensors and energy storage technologies.

Present lithium batteries for electronic vehicles, faces challenges with cost and safety. One particularly problematic aspect is the electrolytes, typically containing both highly flammable solvents and a fluorinated anion.
This technology driven project focuses on the synthesis of new environmental friendly fluorine free electrolytes for Li battery applications.
The project is a part of an interdisciplinary research team working both on the synthetic chemistry, as well as the materials characterization side of the development of new materials.
Major responsibilities
The goal is to develop and synthesize new electrolytes for Li batteries.
Key parts of the work will be:
• Design and synthesis of fluorine free electrolytes.
• Characterization and Evaluation of the new materials
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 10% of working hours.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
A suitable candidate would be a highly ambitious person that holds a master degree in Chemistry, Nano-Science or Materials science with a focus on Organic Chemistry or Inorganic Chemistry or equivalent. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have good collaboration skills and be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20130243 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.
Application deadline: November 1st, 2013
