We are inviting applications for a salaried five year PhD position that is to investigate the consequences of introducing AI in biomedicine from a social science perspective.
Information about the division and the project
The Division of Science, Technology and Society is looking for a PhD student in Science, Technology and Society. We research and teach Science and Technology Studies, Valuation Studies, Environmental Humanities, Ethics of Technology, and Gender and Technology.
This PhD position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program on Humanities and Society (WASP-HS) aims to realize excellent research and develop competence on the consequences and challenges of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems for the individual person and society. This 10-year program is initiated and generously funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW) with 660 million SEK. In addition to this, the program receives support from collaborating industry and from participating universities. Major goals are more than 10 new faculty positions and more than 70 new PhDs. The WASP-HS graduate school provides foundations, perspectives, and state-of-the-art knowledge in the different disciplines taught by leading researchers in the field. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, researchers and practitioners in the field. It thus provides added value on top of the existing PhD programs at the partner universities, providing unique opportunities for students who are dedicated to achieving international research excellence with societal relevance.
Major responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, your main responsibility is to pursue your doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. The PhD program includes doctoral courses, literature reviews, designing research tasks, collecting and analysing empirical data, and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing, primarily in English. The exact design of your PhD project will be decided in collaboration with the main supervisor.
The position will also include teaching in undergraduate level courses, supervising student projects or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Starting date
The latest possible starting date is on Mon 17 Aug 2020.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with a master's level degree from the social sciences, humanities, or engineering with a strong interest in how technology is intertwined with knowledge production. Relevant degrees can be in for instance in STS, sociology, anthropology, communication studies, or other related fields. Additional qualifications for applicants with a MSc (Science or Engineering) degree are a Master's thesis on a social scientifically themed topic and experience/interest in working with qualitative social science methods.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
