PhD student position in Semiconductor Materials

Arbetsbeskrivning

The laboratory
This PhD position is a part of the collaboration between the Photonics Laboratory and the Terahertz and Millimeter Wave Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2). The Photonics Laboratory conducts application oriented research in optoelectronics and fibre optics, as well as more fundamental research on new photonic materials, while the Terahertz and Millimeter Wave Laboratory focuses on fabrication and development of THz devices and circuits for radio astronomy and atmospheric science, life science, radar sensors and THz imaging applications. We participate in European projects and work closely with academic and industrial partners world-wide. We will now consolidate our collaboration and enhance our competence of epitaxy at MC2 with a new PhD student to work on dilute bismide and related nanostructures.

The project
Dilute bismide is a novel class of III-V compound semiconductors and possesses a number of interesting physical properties such as a large band-gap bowing effect, a large spin-orbit split band and an increased valence band offset etc. Bismuth is also an excellent surfactant and has a strong impact on epitaxy of nanostructures. These unique features enable bismide as a novel building block to engineer band gap, carrier mobility and to reduce Auger recombination in hetero- and nanostructures with potential applications for IR optoelectronic devices and high speed electronics. The project will focus on epitaxial growth of novel bismide heterostructures and nanostructures using advanced molecular beam epitaxy.

Major responsibilities
We seek for a PhD student to work on development of growing novel dilute bismide and related nanostructures. The work is mainly experimental with a focus on developing novel and cost-effective nanoscale patterning approaches, growth of functional bismuth containing heterostructures and nanosctructures using molecular beam epitaxy, and characterization of various physical properties. In addition, novel bismide devices such as infrared light emitting diodes etc. will be fabricated and measured. Your major responsibility as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position also includes departmental work, mostly as a teaching assistant, corresponding to about 10% of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
By the starting date, the applicant should have a Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Solid knowledge in the areas of semiconductors is required. Any experience from material characterization, device fabrication in a cleanroom environment, and/or theoretical modeling is a merit. A good command of English is required.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20150137 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: May 7, 2015
