Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development.Umeå University conducts groundbreaking research within several areas - several in which we are among the best in the world - within others regarded as the leaders in Sweden.We are one of Sweden's largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes.Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here.We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.PhD student position in theoretical physics We are looking for a PhD student to do theoretical work on quantum hydrodynamics in the Department of Physics at Umeå University.The position is a full-time position extending for four years.Opportunities for part-time teaching may be offered.The position is planned to be filled before spring 2010.The project will be in quantum hydrodynamics, a research area which brings together the research fields of nonlinear physics and cold quantum gases.The work consists of analytical and numerical studies of quantum liquids and gases.Specifically, the research project will focus on studying hydrodynamic phenomena such as instabilities and shocks in Bose-Einstein condensates and ultracold Fermi gases.The theoretical research on quantum gases and nonlinear physics in Umeå is carried out in collaboration with local experimental research and several international research groups.Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS-credits (swe.högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe.poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits of these) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007.In addition to these general requirements, 120 ECTS credits need to be in physics.The application should include: i) a curriculum vitae; ii) transcripts of records; iii) names and contacts of 1 to 3 references; and iv) a cover letter summarizing your qualifications and motives for applying.If applicable, also attach a list of publications.Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.
