PhD Student Position in Timber Structures within
Modular industrialised cross laminated timber housing
The PhD student will be employed at Luleå University of technology, but is considered as an Industrial PhD position and the candidate will spend major part of the study time at the co-financier Stora Enso Wood Products in Finland and Sweden. The project is aiming to develop a cross laminated timber based interna-tional housing concept for the urban environment.
The research is performed at the Timber Structures research group, within the Division of Structural Engineering.Research at Timber Structures ranges from timber engineering through industrial construction methods, to management and control of production and design processes.Today we are 17 researchers, seven females, and are the leading group in Sweden in this area
Industrialised timber systems share in Swedish multi-storey sector has now reached around 10% and is still increasing.Elsewhere in Europe, excluding the UK, this number is much less than 5%.The Swedish model for industrialised multi-storey timber housing combines and integrates construction process development with structural and functional performance of the building system. In the project "Modular industrialised cross laminated timber housing" the aim is to develop and verify structural detail design solutions of a cross laminated timber (CLT) building system incorporating structural and process efficiency. This implies an industrial structural system design and verification research effort. The work also includes participation in pre-design, real building (pilot) project experience feedback optimization of a production method and computer or laboratory testing of selected and developed structural components and joints.
Qualifications
The PhD candidate should have 240 credits of which 60 credits on an advanced level within Civil Engineering, Mechanical engineering or equivalent. The candidate should also be excellent in written and oral communication in Swedish and English.Speaking Finnish and German is a plus, since part of the work will be carried out in close co-operation with local building industries.Knowledge about Timber Engineering and/or structural engineering and advanced computational methods is a merit as well as a high quality and relevant student diploma work.
