PhD student position in yeast metabolic engineering

PhD student position in yeast metabolic engineering

Arbetsbeskrivning

Are you interested in developing novel microorganisms for sustainable food production? We are looking for a PhD student to work in an interdisciplinary project that aims at producing food oils from engineered microbial consortia. You will be responsible for genetically engineering yeasts to produce tailored lipids from sugars provided by cyanobacteria.

Information about the project
The project is a newly established collaboration between our lab and three research groups at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research.

The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at the Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world leading research groups in systems biology of metabolism. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from understanding the fundamental operational principles of metabolism and studies of metabolic diseases, to highly applied research directed towards development of new cell factories for the production of valuable chemicals.

-The details of the departmental research activities may be found here.

Major responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student interested in yeast synthetic biology. You will be responsible for the daily planning and execution of your experiments as well as critically analyzing and discussing your results. Experiments will include cloning, introduction of genetic modifications in yeast, cultivation at different scale, analysis of lipids and other metabolites. You are expected to communicate your research in different settings, and to work in close interaction with other team members as well as the external collaboration partners.

As a Chalmers PhD student, you will also be expected to teach in undergraduate level courses or performing other departmental duties, and attend courses both in subjects directly related to your research and in general skills such as project management, teaching and writing. At the Division level, you will take part in the general maintenance of instruments and will have the opportunity to supervise MSc and BSc students.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field (Molecular Biology, Microbial Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology or similar). Basic microbiology/biochemistry laboratory experience and fluency in verbal and written English are mandatory.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
