PhD student position with expertise in Microwave and Semiconductor Devices

PhD student position with expertise in Microwave and Semiconductor Devices

Arbetsbeskrivning

In this position you will be part of forming the future generations wireless communication and sensing systems. You will investigate application-driven challenges in high-power multi-antenna transmitters. Your work will be dedicated to the design, modeling, and experimental implementation of these systems -challenges that incorporate research in Microwave Engineering, Active Semiconductor Devices, Electromagnetism, Thermal transport, and Mechanical engineering. You will iteratively work with novel experimental implementations to the reproduce the true multi-physical environment in the device characterization laboratory. This will give new insight into device reliability as well as performance optimization of future systems.

Information about the division and the research
The position is hosted by the Microwave Electronics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) in close collaboration with the Antenna systems laboratory at the Department of Electrical Engineering (E2) and industry partners. In this position you will get the chance to spend quite some time on experiments in Chalmers open infrastructure for microwave and Terahertz technology, the Kollberg Laboratory, which is one of Europe’s most well-equipped measurement infrastructures in the field.

The research is carried out in close collaboration with industry in a project supported by Chalmers, Industry partners, and the Swedish Agency for Innovation systems Vinnova.

Beside research, involving experimental and theoretical work, as described above, you are also expected to be involved in education as teaching assistant courses and co-supervisor of BSc and MSc thesis students.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student are to pursue your own doctoral studies, including both coursework and research. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

- Perform research defined in our industry-financed projects
- Perform lab-oriented tasks (measurement setup etc.)
- Co-supervision of MSc students

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent. You also need practical experience of high-frequency electronics measurements, multiphysical simulations, mechanical engineering, and thermal design.

Furthermore, it will be valuable if you can take on some responsibility, take own initiatives, and work independently when needed. At the same time, it is important that you are a good team player. This is especially vital since the current project will interact closely with adjacent disciplines and with industrial partners. A high level of written and spoken English is required.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
