PhD student positions in additive manufacturing of metals

PhD student positions in additive manufacturing of metals

Arbetsbeskrivning

Join a young team with a strong national and international network in the field of the rapidly expanding area of metal additive manufacturing, with unique opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge and make a difference for the future by contributing to the sustainable development involving a technology for manufacture of tomorrow!

The main competencies at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of: Human-Technology Interaction | Form and Function | Modeling and Simulation | Product Development | Materials | Production and in the interaction between these areas. The research focuses on the development of the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here, we gather internationally prominent researchers in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks. http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/ims/

Equality between women and men is a prerequisite for Chalmers to be a good place to work and study, and for us to develop as a technical university. One of the department’s primary objectives is to contribute to Chalmers’ overall gender equality with particular emphasis on Chalmers’ fundamental values – quality, openness, inclusion, respect, diversity.

Information about the research
The Division of Materials and Manufacture is part of the Department of Industrial and Materials Science and addresses research questions related to additive manufacturing, powder technology, surface engineering, 2D-materials like graphene, surface coatings, nanomaterials, metal cutting and grinding. The division is the host for the national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metals, http://www.chalmers.se/en/centres/cam2/Pages/default.aspx).

Connected to this centre, a number of prioritized research areas are launched and developed. As part of the basic research areas, the CAM2 centre also takes the next step in development of new materials for additive manufacturing (AM) and design for AM. Today, the AM group at the division is among the largest groups in AM across Europe with senior researchers, post-docs and PhD students, and we are now seeking a PhD student with interest in metal additive manufacturing, in particular Laser Based Powder Bed Fusion (LB-PBF) of Ni-based superalloys. We invite applicants demonstrating an adequate background to be able to address metal LB-PBF material processing, especially pre-processing and design for AM, process development and materials characterisation, with particular reference to Ni-based superalloys.

Major responsibilities
You will be working with the process and materials development of Laser Based Powder Bed Fusion (LB-PBF) with particular emphasis on material challenges in connection to design for AM especially in reference to Ni-based superalloys.

As candidate you are expected to obtain a PhD degree in about 4.5 years. Your major responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of the research performed verbally in an international context. The position also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 15 to 20 percent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated and independent candidate with a MSc degree awarded by an internationally recognized university in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry or other relevant subjects. Experience and good knowledge in materials science are required. Additional knowledge and experience in metal powder bed fusion, characterization techniques, materials synthesis and processing are considered as advantages. All the skills mentioned above have to be clearly indicated in the application and confirmed, if possible, by supplementary documentation (MSc Thesis, journal papers, course certificates, reference letters, etc.). Interest and curiosity in the subject as well as good analytical skills are required. Good communicative and collaborative skills are essential; the applicant is also expected to be proficient in both verbal and written English. To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
