PhD student positions in mathematical statistics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 170 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas.

We are located in a modern building at the center of Chalmers Johanneberg campus. More information about us can be found on our website http://www.chalmers.se/math/

Information about the division
At the division of mathematical statistics we do internationally recognized research in probability, statistics and their applications, including (but not limited to) biostatistics, bioinformatics, population dynamics, stochastic processes, spatial statistics, Bayesian statistics, extreme value theory and the theory of large random networks.

We are now looking for at least two doctoral students in mathematical statistics, including two positions in the following research areas

1) spatial statistics: development of computationally efficient methods for the analysis of large data sets, position at Chalmers (http://www.chalmers.se/~bodavid/misc/project_description.pdf),
2) biostatistics: network modeling for large-scale human cancer studies, position at  the University of Gothenburg (http://www.chalmers.se/~jornsten/index.html)

Job description
As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge of the field and write your thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20 % departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematical statistics. They must have obtained a master's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete that degree by September 1, 2014. It is important that you mention in the application your specific research interests and which of the two positions you are interested in. You should also include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis (or outline of a thesis under preparation) and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored.

The bachelor's level teaching is normally in Swedish, although the teaching at the master's and PhD levels is in English. Thus, good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as their native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.

Application procedure

The application should be marked with Ref 20140015 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: February 28, 2014
