Arbetsbeskrivning
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 170 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas.
We are located in a modern building at the center of Chalmers campus. More information about us can be found on our website http://www.chalmers.se/math/
Information about the division
At the division of mathematics there are many internationally successful mathematicians in a wide variety of research areas such as algebraic geometry, number theory, algebra and representation theory, harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, computational mathematics and optimization, probability and discrete mathematics, complex analysis, functional analysis, kinetic theory and biomathematics. We are now looking for doctoral students in mathematics, including (but not limited to) in particular one in ergodic theory/harmonic analysis at Chalmers, one in discrete probability at Chalmers and one in operator theory/harmonic analysis at University of Gothenburg; for any other position all research areas will be considered.
Job description
As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge of the field and write your thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20 % departmental work, mostly teaching duties.
The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics. They must have obtained a master's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete that degree by September 1, 2014.
It is important that you mention in the application your specific research interests and if you are in particular interested in the special projects mentioned above. You should also include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis (or outline of a thesis under preparation) and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored. Evidence of mathematical problem solving skills is significant, besides course grades.
The bachelor's level teaching is normally in Swedish, although the teaching at the master's and PhD levels is in English. Thus, good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as their native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20140010 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.
Application deadline: February 28, 2014
