PhD student positions in the study of evolved stars and star formation

Arbetsbeskrivning

Curiosity is the driving force behind the research at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and our goals are to find new knowledge about space, our earth and our future energy supply. Through observations of the universe as well as earth, we make predictions about the future and promote sustainable development. To reach our goals, we develop highly sensitive measuring instruments and observational methods, as well as advanced algorithms for data analysis and theoretical models.

The department has roughly 110 employees, divided into eight research groups and one administrative group. We are situated at campus Johanneberg and Onsala Space Observatory.Information about the the division
The radio astronomy and astrophysics group is situated at the Onsala Space Observatory, which is the Swedish national facility for Radio Astronomy. The Observatory operates telescopes in Sweden, shares in the APEX telescope in Chile, and hosts the Nordic ALMA Regional Center (ARC). The research topics of the radio astronomy and astrophysics group range from galaxy formation and evolution, galaxy clusters to Galactic star formation and evolved stars.

Major responsibilities
Applications are invited for PhD positions in the study of evolved stars and/or star formation. The ERC funded research group of Dr. Wouter Vlemmings will focus on radio, millimeter and/or sub-millimeter wavelength observations of evolved stars or star forming regions (in particular of magnetic fields) with instruments such as ALMA, JVLA, eMERLIN and APEX. One PhD position will be dedicated to the eMERLIN "feedback during massive star formation" legacy project with another focused on observations and modeling of evolved star magnetic fields. The successful applicants will work mainly at Onsala Space Observatory, where Chalmers hosts the Swedish National Facility for Radio Astronomy.

Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position can also include teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding up to 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years (depending on departmental duties). The starting date should preferably be before July 2014.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in astronomy or physics. Experience with stellar evolution, star formation, magnetic fields or interferometry would be an asset. Good command of the English language is also required.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20130308 and written in English. The application should be submitted electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: January 15, 2014
