PhD Student - Volvo Industrial PhD Program
At Research & Development you will be a key contributor to the next generation of outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.
The Thermodynamics section within the Environment & Fluid Dynamics department is a part of the Complete Vehicle organisation at R&D. At Thermodynamics we work closely together with Product Design and many engineering departments to secure the driveline as well as components and systems from a thermic point of view. The section Thermodynamics has a long tradition of using physical testing, CFD and experience as tools for our engineering and design processes. We are currently 18 analysis engineers working within the group. We work together with stylists and designers to develop and verify the systems and components in our future vehicles. An important part of our work is to continuously improve our working processes and methods. Furthermore, close cooperation with universities and participation in global research programs are an essential part of our long term development. We are now looking for a PhD Student that will be employed by Volvo Cars to join our team.
The PhD project is aimed primarily at developing a reliable simulation methodology for studying a complete hybrid or electric car as a thermal system. This problem should be tackled in two parts.
The first part is to develop a method to measure the air flow in the engine bay and to use this to validate and further develop today's simulation methods. The second part is to develop a methodology to model the thermal aspects of a hybrid or electric car. This includes the complex interaction of airflows and temperatures in the engine bay and the thermal behavior of power electronics components, hybrid battery and its cooling system. This methodology to model the thermal aspects of a hybrid electric vehicle is intended for use in the virtual product development at Volvo Cars. The work will result in a licentiate and doctoral thesis at Chalmers Technical Univerity Gothenburg. One or two Master thesis projects will be carried out as support. Results will be published in international conferences, scientific journals, and relevant forums.
