PhD students in Systems Engineering Design

PhD students in Systems Engineering Design

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Systems Engineering Design Group at the department of Industrial and Materials Science now has open PhD student positions in Systems Engineering Design. As a PhD student you will be a part of developing engineering methods, tools, theory and practices for engineering design in collaboration with high-profiled industrial partners in Sweden and Europe. As such you will be a part of the industrial transformation to a more digital and sustainable future.

Project description
We are launching several new national and European projects with industrial partners in space, aerospace and advanced manufacturing industry, and seek PhD students with a dedicated interest in product development and how engineering methods and tools can be better used to serve the emerging needs, as industry faces new, disruptive technologies (electrification, additive manufacturing and more) while digitalization bring new ability to model, evaluate, connect and visualise situations during design and product development. All PhD positions address design and evaluation of multidisciplinary design problems such as:

How to bring in new manufacturing technologies into industrial practice, especially additive manufacturing? (See a. below).

How to strengthen the ability to automatically explore and evaluate alternative design concepts for new aero engine components? (See b. below)

How to make us of digital twins to concurrently design multi-technological products?  (See c. below) and

What engineering decision support is needed for designer engineers when introducing radical and novel and sustainable technologies? (See d. below).

We need to strengthen the research group in several related areas (see a-d below) including both development of next generation engineering modelling and design automation tools and design methods for integration of new technologies such as additive manufacturing. The introduction of new technologies into new complex products why mastering multi-disciplinary design situations, require automation of engineering tasks but also to understand systemic behavior such as impact on sustainability and how the product behave in its use situations. PhD students have a sincere interest in developing their knowledge into latest technologies such as additive manufacturing and tools for data analytics, advanced modelling and simulation but also a sincere interest in understanding industrial scale situations and problems.

We now seek 4 PhD students in neighboring areas, for which you are encouraged to express your specific interest in an application. The areas are

a. Digital Design for Additive Manufacturing (AM). Design using additive manufacturing require ability to account for a range of aspects (topology optimisation, materials, production, post processing and life cycle behavior) in conceptual design studies. The research focus on digitalisation aspects for industrialisation of additive manufacturing in the conceptual design phase.

b. Generative automated design (KBE) enabling enable digital experiments. The application domain is primarily technologies for next generation aircraft engine technologies and their integration in propulsion systems. The position requires interests in advanced CAD and Design Automation (e.g. KBE) as well as ability to represent also novel technologies from different disciplines (materials, electronics) and evaluation methods.

c. Digital Twin driven modelling of multidomain dynamical systems. Design and evaluate system solutions combining disciplines (mechanical/electrical/hydraulic/software). Design and develop decision support tools and methods for integrated assessment of the value of alternative system architectures. Application domain is primarily next generation satellite propulsion technologies.

d. Design for disruptive technology product and process integration. Focus om modelling and simulation of balancing conflicting needs with new technologies. Industrial challenges are analysed and the product concepts need to enable definition and evaluations of margins and value, with respect to e.g. novel and sustainable technologies.

As a PhD student, 20% of the position include teaching duties.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The positions are limited to a maximum of five years.
