The U.S. Embassy in Stockholm is the center for the United States' diplomatic engagement with Sweden. The Embassy interacts on a daily basis with a wide array of Swedish government representatives, local businesses, NGOs, media, educational institutions, and private citizens. Several U.S. agencies work together at the Embassy, all under the authority of the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, including the U.S. State Department. The State Department hires citizens from host countries to provide local professional knowledge and institutional memory.
The U.S. Embassy in Stockholm is now looking to hire a Political Assistant for its Political-Economic Section. This section is responsible for reporting on political and economic issues that affect bilateral relations and foreign policy.
The incumbent supports the Political Section and Ambassador's Office on political reporting, contact development, and other efforts to advance U.S. interests. The incumbent performs independent research and analysis, provides recommendations on tactics and strategy, and drafts reports on domestic political developments in Sweden, Sweden's foreign policy, political-military affairs, counter terrorism, countering violent extremism, disinformation, human rights, and more. The incumbent develops and maintains contacts with working-level and senior officials. The incumbent drafts Congressionally mandated reports.
EDUCATION:
University degree in political science, government, international relations or peace and conflict studies.
EXPERIENCE:
At least two years previous work experience working directly with the primary issues covered by the incumbent's portfolio: Domestic politics, political-military affairs, justice and home affairs, or regional security.
LANGUAGE:
Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required.
Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing Swedish is required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to conduct research and write reports with a minimum of supervision. Self-starter: able to gather information from various sources and build a contact network without being tasked. Incumbent must demonstrate good interpersonal skills and judgement. PC and word processing skills are essential.
