Polymer Technician (TE-MSC-MDT-2020-112-LD)
Geneva, Switzerland
Contract

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Join a great team pushing the limits of superconducting accelerator magnets and polymer technology, to shape the future of CERN largest accelerator. Take part!

You will join:

The Magnet Design and Technology (MDT) Section, which is responsible for the superconducting magnet design and technology for the full range, from functional specification to the construction of short prototypes. The Section also designs the studies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) upgrade and future projects, by involving superconducting magnets; performs superconducting magnet performance analysis and feedback on the design; maintains the Magnetic model of the LHC; and provides support to beam commissioning and operation; is responsible for the superconducting magnet insulation development; and provides CERN-wide support for polymer casting and rapid prototyping.
The Polymer laboratory provides a CERN-wide service for polymer applications in casting and 3D printing technologies. It develops and fabricates polymer parts and assemblies for detector and accelerator applications as special developments and in small series.

Functions

As an experienced chemical technician and a specialist in the use of plastic materials, composites and resins, you will join a small team providing a CERN-wide service known as the "polymer lab". You will:

Provide support to CERN personnel and users in the selection and application of polymers.
Impregnate parts for a large range of applications using various vacuum and pressure impregnation techniques.
Participate in the development of a large variety of polymer and composite material applications.
Provide a safe working environment and maintain the relevant safety documentation.
Conceive and perform quality control of polymeric materials and components.
Do analysis and measurements using state-of-the-art physico-chemical, mechanical and dimensional analysis instruments.
Maintain the laboratory instrumentation and tooling.
Supervise or support students, trainees or other temporary workers in the laboratory.

Qualifications

Proven experience with the application of polymers and composites.
Proven experience with state-of-the-art physico-chemical, mechanical and dimensional analysis instruments.
Experience in moulding techniques with plastics.
Experience in working in combined teams of engineers and technicians in a multicultural environment.
Familiarity with European safety standards for storage and usage of chemicals.
Technical competencies:

Knowledge and application of polymers.
Processing of non-metallic materials.
Knowledge and application of chemical, electro-chemical and radio-chemical analysis.
Knowledge and application of conventional dimensional metrology.

Behavioural competencies:

Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind; allocating appropriate amount of time for completing tasks.
Demonstrating flexibility: being willing to move from one project/group/department to another.
