Post-Doc in Hydrological Research

The unit for Hydrological Research works in Sweden, Europe and worldwide with developing Water and Climate services based on forecast and scenario tools. We assess and predict variability in water resources, climate change impacts, and water quality in catchments. Our work aims to improve decision-making for water resource management and environmental control, as well as forecasting in early warning services for water-related sectors. We work directly with both external end-users and SMHI’s operational divisions. The unit is very international with some 30 employees from 13 countries.

We are now looking forward to employing scientists with experience in hydrology and/or sediment research for developing our water and climate services in Sweden and internationally who will contribute to on-going projects with international collaboration in Europe and world-wide. The work includes programming, scientific analysis and publishing in scientific journals.

The position is temporary for 2 years, starting as soon as possible, with 100% working time and located in Norrköping.

Your profile

We are looking for goal-oriented colleagues, passionate about their work, who are comfortable working both independently and in teams. You are a good communicator in spoken and written English, with the ambition to learn Swedish within a year.

You have a doctoral degree in hydrology or closely related subject. You have a deep understanding of hydrological processes at catchment scale and landscape level. You need to have good knowledge in programming linked to water and climate research. Proficiency in R and Python is a merit. Additional merits if you have experience with FORTRAN, Linux, GIS and hydrological modeling. You have proven experience in handling/managing/analyses of large data volumes, gridded and otherwise, and in various formats (e.g. netcdf), for research as well as other applications (e.g. forecasts and climate impacts). You have a documented continuous production of scientific papers.

We value skills in giving presentations and lectures, team work, agile approaches and delivery of results in a timely and qualitative manner. A well-developed professional international network is a merit. A work permit for Sweden (this is the case for EU citizens) is a merit.

In addition to all the above, it is essential that you possess ONE of the three specialization credentials listed below:


• Water quality/Sediments: Experience in modelling and calibration of hydrological, soil erosion and/or sediment processes. Education or experience in water quality modelling, statistics, spatial analysis and quality assurance is a merit. The post-doc will contribute to development and calibration of large-scale hydrological (rainfall-runoff/erosion-transport) models, development and testing of the model processes, impact analyses, and processing and management of large data volumes.
• Forecasts of water variables: Experience in hydro-meteorological forecasting and post-processing at different time horizons, i.e. short to medium, sub-seasonal, seasonal, and decadal. The post-doc will investigate different methods, i.e. bias-adjustment, seamless combination, multi-modelling averaging, ensemble sub-selection, model output statistics, and machine learning, to improve forecasting skill. Experience on forecast impact assessment, data assimilation, and user-tailored communication practices are considered as a merit.
• Large scale hydrological modelling: Experience in hydrological modelling. Deep understanding of hydrological processes at catchment scale and landscape level. Education in statistics, spatial analysis and quality assurance is a merit. The post-doc will contribute to the development and calibration of large-scale hydrological (rainfall-runoff) models and operational management of large data volumes to be evaluated and used for research as well as different applications (e.g. forecasts and climate impacts).
