Arbetsbeskrivning
Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.
The marine microbiology research group in Kalmar seeks a Post Doctoral researcher for studies of the photoheterotrophy of marine bacteria.
Project title
Proteorhodopsin photoheterotrophy in marine bacteria
The research project
Marine bacteria play a central role in driving global biogeochemical cycles of elements essential to life (e.g. carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous), but detailed knowledge of how bacteria carry out specific steps in element cycling is lacking. The main goal of this project is to investigate the molecular mechanisms employed by marine bacteria carrying out proteorhodopsin-mediated photoheterotrophy. Analysis approaches include next-generation gene expression sequencing methodologies as well as rate measurements of a variety of bacterial activities and metabolisms.
Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a doctoral degree in microbial ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry or similar.
Applicants should have documented expertise in performing physiological response experiments with bacteria and determining activities of bacteria using radioactive tracers.
Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include experience with processing and analyzing samples for next-generation sequencing techniques, high proficiency in written and spoken English, ability to solve problems and the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
Terms of employment
Full time for 12 months with the posibility of extension.
The employment is planned to start 1st of Januari 2017, but the starting date is flexible.
Placement city
