Post-doc investigating a H2 engine with variable valve timing

Post-doc investigating a H2 engine with variable valve timing

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a post doctoral researcher that want to contribute to a sustainable transport future and study a novel hydrogen engine concept together with our industry partner.

Information about the research
Use of hydrogen as renewable fuel is attractive in those areas where electrification is difficult. This project concerns experimental research on a heavy duty single cylinder engine equipped with variable valve timing. The objective is to show and develop a strategy to operate the engine on hydrogen fuel and increase the power-density of the engine. The project is in collaboration with an industry partner, and the applicant is expected to collaborate closely with the industry partner, co-workers and share knowledge in a congenial, open research environment. This project is financed by both the Swedish Energy Agency and industry partner.

This project is aligned with several other projects, hence you will be included in a team of researchers that are working on hydrogen combustion and associated research questions.
The research is carried out at the Division of Combustion and propulsion systems. This division is working to contribute to a sustainable transport solution. It is one of seven divisions at the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences. Our ambition is to generate knowledge and methods that the society needs to be able to develop: highly efficient and ultra-clean internal combustion engines running on renewable/low carbon fuels, taking exhaust after-treatment into account, and that are a part of an electrified/hybridized propulsion system. In other words, to enable transport without toxic emissions.

Major responsibilities
You will take part in setting up a gas exchange simulation model of the engine with variable valve timing and hydrogen injection capability to generate knowledge of phenomena such as volumetric efficiency, scavenging of air, residual gas fraction etc. resulting in different performance of the engine. Further you will experimantally validate valve timing variations on an engine operated on vehicle gas and hydrogen on different operating modes, comparing with conventional settings as a benchmark. Expected results are specific valve timings, ignition and fuel-injection timings for max. power-density, efficiency and emissions. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Contract terms
The position is a full-time temporary employment. It is limited to a maximum of two years, starting with a one-year employment, followed by an evaluation, if the work is proceeding sufficiently well the employment will be extended for a second year. You will be employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position as a Postdoctoral Researcher you must have a PhD degree in a relevant field. The position requires knowledge and experimental experience in internal combustion engines (ICE).

In order to be suitable for the position you need to enjoy working independently and plan and think strategically. You are conscious about quality and we also believe that you are a motivated person, with a strong curiosity. The project interacts closely with industrial partners, thus you need to have sound collaborative skills. Knowledge of and experience in Matlab and 0D simulation are meritorious. Good verbal and written communication skills in English are essential. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
