Description of directorate/division
The neutron optics and shielding group at the ESS is responsible for designing and optimising the neutron optical systems that transport the neutrons from the moderator to the neutron spectrometer sample position. The optics technology will involve neutron guides, polarising mirrors, helium 3 analyser cells, collimation devices, diffractive elements such as monochromators, etc.
Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will engage with the ESS instrument scientists and the instrument project teams in designing and optimising the neutron optical systems to deliver the maximum possible signal to noise ratio within the region of phase space that is of particular concern for the instrument. He or she will work closely with the rest of the neutron optics team, the instrument teams, and the engineering staff at the ESS, in addition to the partner laboratories working on instrument projects around Europe.

• Neutron scattering instrumentation and experiments
• Neutron guide systems and beams
• Numerical optimisation strategies with ray-tracing simulations and/or analytical derivation of system performance, acceptance diagrams etc.
• Optical effects and aberrations caused by polychromatic neutron beams interacting with mirrors, lenses, crystals, and how to optimise these to achieve maximum performance
• Experience in numerical coding in mathematica, C/C++, Java, python or similar languages
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential
