Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
At the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies we offer a creative and stimulating environment and perform internationally recognized basic and applied research, education and environmental monitoring in the areas of biodiversity restoration and conservation, fish biology and wildlife ecology. The Department has a large number of international employees and well-established national and international cooperation, which gives opportunities for fruitful exchange.
Duties:
We seek a post doc to work within a research project that investigates the importance of repeat spawners in trout and salmon populations. Part of the project includes identifying and testing solutions to improve downstream passage in regulated rivers.
The expansion of hydropower has had profound effects on migrating fish populations. A key problem that needs to be addressed, given the ongoing re-licensing process for all of Sweden’s hydropower plants, is to find passage solutions for downstream migrating adult fish. One part of the project is aimed at testing new methods for guiding fish as they approach migration barriers. The post doc will take responsibility for studies performed in at least one of our focus rivers.
Another part of the project is aimed at investigating the importance of repeat spawning for the dynamics and structure of salmon and trout populations in a large number of rivers. The post doc is expected to lead at least one study on the importance of repeat spawning. Opportunities to work with population modelling and other questions also exist within the project.
The main supervisor for the post-doctoral researcher will be Karin Nilsson (Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies, SLU Umeå). The work will be carried out in collaboration with one PhD student and several senior researchers, including Kjell Leonardsson (SLU Umeå), Larry Greenberg (Karlstad University), Atso Romankkaniemi (LUKE, Finland), Patrik Andreasson (SLU Umeå and Vattenfall R&D) and David Aldvén (Vattenfall R&D). Collaboration with other hydropower companies, county boards and other stakeholders is a crucial part of the project.
Qualifications:
We seek a highly motivated candidate who is able to take own initiatives and work both independently and in a group. Knowledge about population dynamics, fish migration and general ecology is highly desirable. The ideal candidate should have some experience tagging and tracking fish.
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in ecology, environmental science or the equivalent. Excellent skills in written and oral communication in English are required. In the selection process, special weight will be given to the applicant's research skills, as demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s PhD thesis, published scientific articles and other scientific merits. Special weight will also be given to the applicant’s knowledge in experimental design and statistics, and the applicant’s experience in conducting experiments and investigations in aquatic environments.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates obtained a doctoral degree within the last three years.
