Post-doc position in mathematics: Geometric Deep Learning

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the department the division and the project
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employeesand is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas is conducted. We are located in a modern building at the center of the Chalmers campus. Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.

More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math/

At the division of Algebra and Geometry we conduct research in areas such as algebraic and complex geometry, various aspects of number theory, algebra and representation theory, complex analysis, and mathematical physics. This includes analytic number theory and in particular the analytical theory of L-functions. We are looking for one post doctor in mathematics to work on the following project together with professor Daniel Persson at the division of Algebra and Geometry.

The project aims to develop the mathematical framework for deep learning on manifolds. The focus will initially be on convolutional neural networks which are equivariant with respect to coordinate transformations in the manifold. The formalism is closely similar to gauge theory and general relativity in physics and exploring this connection is a potential side project.

The project is financed by a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Outstanding applications from all mathematical research areas will be considered. Precedence will however be given to those who have a research profile compatible with the project description.

Major responsibilities
You will work in the research area of geometric deep learning. The main focus initially will be on group equivariant convolutional neural networks. You will also be encouraged to explore various possible applications, such as to autonomous driving and climate data. You are expected to contribute by developing new ideas both independently and in collaborations. You should be highly motivated and independent. Your ability to collaborate and communicate will be taken into account in the assessment.

Teaching, possibly including supervision of students’ independent work, may be part of your duties up to an extent of 20 %. Our teaching languages are English and Swedish. As most of our teaching is in Swedish, the options will vary according to your language skills. Chalmers University of Technology offers courses in the Swedish language.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you should have completed a Ph.D. degree in mathematics or equivalent, by the application deadline. The degree should generally not be older than three years at the time of the application deadline. Exceptions may be made for special reasons, for instance parental leave or military service. Fluency in English is required.

The assessment of your application will be based mainly on your scientific skills. You are expected to provide evidence of excellence in research. The applications will be assessed by a local recruitment committee at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

You should have extensive experience in Python programming, as well as solid, hands-on experience with convolutional neural networks in one of the major deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or Pytorch. In addition, a good working knowledge of differential geometry, fiber bundles, group theory and representation theory is expected. Previous experience with gauge theory and general relativity is also recommended.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
