The National Veterinary Institute (SVA) in Uppsala, Sweden is offering a post doc position for a study of Biological risks from recycled organic waste.SVA is a Swedish national authority that strives for good animal and human health, a good environment and sustainable food production. In an outbreak of epizootic disease, large amounts of contaminated organic material must be handled and disposed of, and biosecurity is vital. Also, during normal animal health conditions manure, low-risk animal by-products and urban organic waste need hygienic treatment before use as a fertiliser on arable land. This study will look at the persistence of pathogens and indicator organisms in different matrices as well as the effect of different treatment options such as storage, anaerobic digestion, chemical sanitation etc.The laboratory work will include analyses of bacteria, bacteriophages, viruses and parasites.Risk assessment concerning biosecurity will be an important part of the work. The study will be in cooperation with the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences. The post doc position will be placed at the Section of Environment and Biosecurity at SVA.Our present research team consists of 7 persons with a background in biology, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, virology, and environmental or civil engineering. Our research is mainly about biosecurity risks in connection to recycling of organic material, including toilet waste, to be used as a fertiliser in agricultureThe study is financed by the Swedish Emergency Management Agency. To support this work we need someone for a post-doc position (1+1 year).Your background is a PhD during the last 5 years in a relevant area, e.g.biology, environmental or civil engineering, with a focus on Microbiology.Experience in risk assessment is appreciated. You are fluent in speaking and writing English.
