The Department of Soil & Environment is a leading center for soil science, nationally and internationally. We conduct research, environmental monitoring & assessment and higher education for sustainable soil management in agricultural, forest and urban environments. Outcomes are aligned to and contribute towards national and international strategies on food security, national environmental objectives and climate reporting as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The majority of the department’s activities are located in the Soil-Water-Environment center at the SLU Ultuna campus in Uppsala with one research group situated in Skara.

Duties:
Conduct research on the interaction between N cycling and the use of biochar within the field experimental work of the BICEPS project in Kenya and South Africa.

Qualifications:
PhD exam in a relevant topic based on research in soil biology or microbial ecology focusing on plant-soil interactions and nitrogen dynamics in soils. Experience in molecular biology methods is a merit. The applicant should have a documented capability to carry out independent research and authoring scientific publications. Extended periods of fieldwork in Kenya and South Africa is part of the job.

Postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, so we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at the most.

Excellent communication skills in oral and written English are expected.
